This enchanting Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre plate is decorated in a rare variation of the desirable Imps on a Bridge and Treehouse pattern. Called the Roc Centre variation, this magical scene is populated by maroon imps crossing a bridge with brown elves watching on, while a green Roc bird flies above the imps between the violet sky and deep sapphire water. Surrounded by a bold gilt rim in the Twyford motif, this plate is described in detail in Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre, by Una des Fontaines.
Fairyland Lustre is one of the most valuable and collectible types of Wedgwood porcelain. The creation of designer Daisy Makeig-Jones was a crowning achievement for Wedgwood in the early 20th century. The exceptional Imps on a Bridge and Treehouse was one of the last five patterns of Fairyland Lustre still being produced in 1940, one year before the last remaining stock was sold. The imps themselves were based on the Kewpies, invented by American poet-artist Rose O'Neill.
