Louis XVI-Style Giltwood Table

Louis XVI-Style Giltwood Table

Louis XVI-Style Giltwood Table
Circa 1860

Fashioned in the Louis XVI style, this magnificent guéridon showcases the refined neoclassical aesthetic through its striking contrast of rich marble top with white veining and ornate gilt wood base. The circular framework features meticulously carved medallions with foliate rosettes, while four fluted legs adorned with cascading floral garlands provide support. A distinctive curved stretcher connects the legs, centered by an elaborate floral basket finial. This exquisite design epitomizes the transition from Rococo extravagance to Louis XVI restraint, combining classical symmetry with decorative richness in perfect balance.

Based on the furniture and decor created during the reign of French King Louis XVI (1774-1789), the Louis XVI style experienced a comeback in the 1860s in Europe and the eastern part of the United States. This revival reintroduced a formal classicism to furniture with an emphasis on simplicity, straight lines and symmetry. Slenderness of proportion was once again favored in furniture, as well as delicate classical motifs and understated luxury. Today, this elegant and timeless style remains highly prized.
