Gold Carnelian Armorial Seal with Agate Handle

Gold Carnelian Armorial Seal with Agate Handle

Gold Carnelian Armorial Seal with Agate Handle
A. Croisier, Paris
Circa 1880

This exquisite agate, gold and carnelian armorial seal, dating to circa 1880, once belonged to the Marquis de Briandas de Casteja, an esteemed page to King Louis XVIII and a notable figure in French history. The seal, used to press into hot wax, would have been an essential part of the Marquis' daily correspondence. As a page to the King and later a military leader, this tool represented the authority and official word of the French royal court. It comes in its original fitted case, bearing the hallmark of Parisian jeweler A. Croisier, located at 20 B. Malesherbes Paris.

According to his obituary published in 1898, the Marquis de Briandas de Casteja was born during the Bourbon exile in England. He lived a remarkable life as a link between the French Republic and the Ancien Régime and graduated as the first page to King Louis XVIII following the restoration in 1814. He later served in the army and played a significant role during the Franco-Prussian War. Known for his service and philanthropy, including turning his home into an asylum for wounded soldiers during the siege of Paris, he remained the last surviving page of King Louis XVIII, passing away at the age of 94.
