George III Silver Pair of Scottish Flagons

George III Silver Pair of Scottish Flagons

Silver Flagons, Set of 2
Gillsand & Ker
Hallmarked Edinburgh, 1765

These monumental George III silver flagons epitomize the era's taste for refined Neoclassical design. Impressive in size yet still elegant in form, these flagons were expertly crafted by important Edinburgh silversmiths Gillsand & Ker circa 1765. Bearing the name of St. Peter's Chapel, an Episcopal church in Montrose, Scotland, these magnificent vessels would have likely been used to transport and dispense communion wine.

Each of the two flagons features a stepped foot along with a stepped and domed cover. The handles are beautifully curving S-scrolls with delicately scrolled thumb pieces, and an applied band divides each flagon in two, creating the perfect sense of harmony and symmetry. Bastions of Neoclassical grace and sophistication, these magnificent flagons were once part of the iconic Red McCombs Collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
