George III Silver Chamberstick by Matthew Boulton

This George III-period silver chamberstick candleholder was crafted by the renowned Birmingham silversmith Matthew Boulton. Its gadrooned base and clean lines demonstrate the understated, neoclassical elegance that defined late Georgian decorative objects, and it is exemplary of the craftsman’s attention to detail and eye for design. Boulton is well-known for his elaborate designs utilizing Sheffield plate. This particular chamberstick, however, is crafted of sterling silver, a medium Boulton preferred for his most important pieces. Sterling works by Boulton are a rarity, especially those exhibiting the superior workmanship seen in this example.
